The Mandela Effect describes situations where large numbers of people share the same false memory. The name comes from widespread misremembering of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s (he was released in 1990 and died in 2013). Similar examples: the Monopoly man doesn't have a monocle, Darth Vader doesn't say 'Luke, I am your father,' the Berenstain Bears (not Berenstein), Febreze (not Febreeze). These collective false memories reveal surprising things about how memory actually works — and have been hijacked by parallel universe theories.
The Mandela Effect was named by blogger Fiona Broome in 2009 after she discovered others shared her false memory of Nelson Mandela dying in prison. The phenomenon describes cases where many people share identical false memories — collective misrememberings of brand names, movie quotes, and historical events. These aren't random errors: the false memories tend to be internally consistent, often more logical or memorable than the truth, and shared by people across demographics and geographies. Memory researchers see Mandela Effects as predictable outputs of how human memory works; fringe theorists see evidence of parallel universes.

Confabulation is the production of fabricated, distorted, or misinterpreted memories without conscious deception. This connects to real physics: Hugh Everett's many-worlds interpretation (1957) proposes that quantum measurements cause reality to branch into parallel universes where all outcomes occur. 'Quantum immortality' proposes that consciousness always finds itself in a branch where it survived. The physics is real; its connection to Mandela Effects is not — parallel universe branching doesn't produce memories of other branches.

The Berenstain Bears — the children's book series created by Stan and Jan Berenstain — is the most widely cited Mandela Effect example, with thousands of people claiming to remember it as 'The Berenstein Bears' with an e. Source monitoring is the cognitive process by which the brain tags memories with their origin: where you were when you learned something, whether you experienced it directly or heard about it, whether you imagined it or actually saw it. A person who imagined something vividly may later retrieve the memory without the 'imagined' tag, experiencing it as a real perception.
