The Great Smog began in London on December 5, 1952, when a temperature inversion trapped smoke from coal fires, power stations, and vehicles close to the ground. Visibility collapsed, transport stopped, and respiratory deaths continued to rise after the fog lifted. Later analysis estimated that thousands died during and after the event. The crisis helped lead to the UK Clean Air Act of 1956.
